The Metallica frontman sat down with Australia’s Channel V, when they were on tour down under during last months Soundwave Festival. They asked him what he thought the fans would do when he and the rest of the band call it quits. He responded: ”There’s no reason for us to stop, first of all. As far as artists and musicians, they don’t retire. They might tour less. We’re having a blast doing what we’re doing. It’s a beautiful cycle, because they think we inspire them, but they inspire us. It feeds itself.”
Drummer Lars Ulrich shared his sentiment: ”It’s still fun and there’s still a lot of people that get off on it, and, you know, you’re playing to 50,000 people in Norway and most of them weren’t born, not when Kill ‘Em All came out, but, like, when the ‘black album’ came out! You know what I mean, it’s like a whole new thing. The question mark is, I just don’t know physically. The physical element is just the unknown. If we can find a way to deal with that, then I think we could stick around for a while.”
Hetfield also told Channel V that some of his favorite shows of the band’s three-decade career were their 30th anniversary shows last December in San Francisco, saying, “Hometown gigs, celebrating 30 years of being together with fans from every corner of the world (that) traveled in for those shows. We did four shows. We had guests coming up from Ozzy to Halford to Biff from Saxon. Just having people up singing, jamming, it was a beautiful time.”
