This is pretty killer man, well I guess I wouldn’t be blogging about it if it weren’t. Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl directed the newest Soundgarden video, and he did a fantastic job. If you don’t remember, Soundgarden came out with a brand new album in November of last year called “King Animal”. The song, “By Crooked Steps” is the second single coming from that album. Now, as The Hawk’s resident metal-head I do recognize the fact that the grunge movement darn near killed metal as we knew it. However, I have to say I’m a huge fan of Soundgarden, Nirvana & Alice In Chains. So when I saw Dave Grohl gearing up to direct this video, I was already on board.
When asked about how this came about, Dave said: ”I’ll just make up a video in my head as I’m listening to the song, and I didn’t know if it was going to be a single or if they wanted to make a video or what, so…I called my manager and I said, ‘I think I have an idea for a Soundgarden video.’ ‘Okay, did they ask you to do that?’ ‘No…’ So I wrote out the idea and I sent it to the drummer and he said, ‘Yeah that’s kind of cool, (but) I don’t really know if we’re going to make a video.’ So we kind of made them make the video.”
Here he is talking more about it:
Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil corroborated Dave’s version of the story, he said: ”Dave heard the album and loved it, and specifically ‘By Crooked Steps.’ He emailed Matt and told him how much he and Taylor (Foo Fighters drummer) liked the song. He then, unsolicited, submitted a treatment for the video to Matt. Matt shared that email with the band and everyone cracked up. We said, ‘We’ve got to do this. Let’s try this.’”
Here is the finished product:
